Never Hinged

Never hinged — abbreviated NH or, with “mint”, MNH — describes a mint stamp whose gum is exactly as issued, with no mark from a stamp hinge. In Britain the traditional equivalent is unmounted mint (UM); in German-speaking markets it is postfrisch (“post-fresh”).

Why Never Hinged Matters

For most of philately’s history, collectors mounted stamps with hinges — small folded strips of gummed paper. Hinging leaves a mark on the gum, however light. As collectors grew more particular about gum, a price gap opened between hinged and never-hinged copies.

For modern stamps, never-hinged copies are the norm and hinged copies trade at a discount. For older stamps, especially those issued before about 1940, never-hinged copies can be substantially scarcer and priced well above hinged ones. Some catalogues price pre-war stamps as hinged and add a premium for never hinged; others do the reverse for post-war issues.

Grades of Hinging

• NH / MNH / UM — never hinged, gum undisturbed.
• LH — lightly hinged, with a small, faint mark.
• H or MH — hinged.
• HR — hinge remnant.
• HH — heavily hinged.

Beware of Regumming

The premium for never hinged creates an incentive to fake it. Regummed stamps — where new gum is applied to hide hinge marks or missing gum — are a known problem, especially for scarce classic issues. Signs include gum on the perforation tips, an unusual sheen or colour, and gum that does not match the issue’s known type. Expert certificates are advisable for high-value never-hinged stamps.

Keeping Stamps Never Hinged

• Use hingeless stamp mounts or stockbooks.
• Store albums upright in a cool, dry place.
• Avoid pressing albums tightly together, which can stick gum to pages.
