Hinge Remnant

A hinge remnant — abbreviated HR — is a leftover piece of a stamp hinge still attached to the back of a stamp. It usually indicates that the stamp was once mounted in an album and later removed without the hinge peeling away completely. Hinge remnants are most important on mint stamps, where the condition of the gum is a key value factor.

Condition Terms for Hinged Stamps

Sellers use a scale of abbreviations:

• MNH / NH — mint never hinged; gum undisturbed. See never hinged.
• LH — lightly hinged; a small, faint mark where a hinge was cleanly removed.
• HR — hinge remnant; part of the hinge still attached.
• HH — heavily hinged; significant gum disturbance, often from several hingings or a firmly stuck hinge.

Why Hinge Remnants Reduce Value

A hinge remnant shows that the gum has been moistened and disturbed. It also hides the gum beneath it, which may conceal a thin or repair. Buyers therefore pay less for stamps with remnants, especially for issues that are readily available never hinged.

Removing a Hinge Remnant Safely

1. Wait until the hinge is completely dry.
2. Try lifting the edge gently with stamp tongs. Good-quality peelable hinges often come away cleanly.
3. If it resists, stop. Pulling it will likely thin the stamp.

Some collectors soften a remnant with a tiny amount of moisture, but this inevitably disturbs the gum further and is best avoided on valuable stamps. For used stamps, which have no gum, remnants can be removed by soaking.

Avoiding Hinge Remnants

Use peelable hinges and apply them with the minimum of moisture, or house mint stamps in hingeless stamp mounts to keep the gum undisturbed.
