Postal Service Overview

Tonga Post is the Kingdom of Tonga’s postal operator. Tonga — the only Pacific monarchy never to have lost its sovereignty to colonial rule — is one of the Pacific’s oldest stamp-issuing nations, with stamps dating from 1886. Tonga’s philatelic history is distinguished by two notable achievements: it was one of the Pacific’s earliest stamp issuers (preceding many larger and better-known nations) and it pioneered shaped stamps in the 1960s — die-cut banana-shaped, coin-shaped, and free-form stamps that influenced global stamp design for decades.

Notable Stamp Issues

Tonga’s 1886 first stamps depicted the portrait of King George Tupou I — the ruler who unified Tonga and gave it a Constitution. The 1897 Coat of Arms and subsequent king portrait definitives are classic Pacific royal stamps. Tonga’s 1963–1975 shaped stamp revolution: banana-shaped stamps, coin embossed stamps, and increasingly elaborate die-cut shapes made Tonga internationally famous in philatelic circles. These shaped stamps were produced by the pioneering Harry Walsall printers. Modern Tongan stamps feature humpback whales (Tonga’s Ha’apai waters are a major humpback nursery), flying fox, and traditional kava ceremony.

Scott Pacific catalogue covers Tongan stamps. The 1963–1975 shaped stamps are the most internationally known Tongan issues — popular with format and innovation thematic collectors. Coin-embossed stamps (literally pressed to resemble coins) are technically remarkable objects. Humpback whale stamps from Tonga are popular with cetacean thematic collectors — Tonga is one of the world’s best whale watching destinations. The flying fox stamps are distinctive Pacific mammal items. Tonga’s self-adhesive stamps from the 1960s predate the global adoption of self-adhesive technology.
