Postal Service Overview

The Federated States of Micronesia Postal Service manages stamps for the FSM — four states (Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, and Kosrae) in the western Pacific. The FSM was part of the US Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands before issuing stamps in 1984. The Compact of Free Association with the United States was signed in 1986. The FSM has enormous cultural and ecological diversity across its four states — from Yap’s extraordinary stone money (rai) to Chuuk Lagoon’s WWII ghost fleet (some 60 Japanese warships sunk during Operation Hailstone in 1944) — reflected in its stamp programme.

Notable Stamp Issues

Micronesia’s first stamps in 1984 depicted traditional canoe navigation and island culture. Post-Compact stamps have featured Yap’s stone money (rai) — limestone discs up to 3 metres in diameter used as a traditional currency — one of the most distinctive cultural stamp subjects in the Pacific. Chuuk Lagoon WWII ghost fleet stamps — depicting sunken Japanese warships now a famous diving destination — are popular with WWII and maritime history collectors. Pohnpei’s Nan Madol (UNESCO heritage — an ancient megalithic city built on artificial islands) appears on archaeology stamps.
