Postal Service Overview

Ukrposhta (Укрпошта) is Ukraine’s national postal operator. Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on 24 August 1991 and began issuing stamps in 1992. Ukrainian stamps have gained extraordinary international attention since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 — stamps commemorating Ukrainian resistance have sold out within minutes of issue and become global symbols of support. Ukrposhta has continued operating throughout the war, and its wartime stamps are among the most significant philatelic documents of the 21st century.

Notable Stamp Issues

Ukraine’s first stamps in 1992 depicted the Ukrainian trident (tryzub), the national symbol. The 2022 “Russian Warship, Go!” stamp, commemorating the defiant response of Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island to a Russian naval vessel, sold millions of copies and became an international sensation. Subsequent wartime stamps have depicted the Ghost of Kyiv, the Bayraktar drone, and Ukrainian military resistance. Pre-war Ukrainian stamps feature the Sofiyivka arboretum, Carpathian wildlife, and Ukrainian Baroque architecture.

Collecting Tips

Wartime Ukrainian stamps (2022–present) are the most internationally known modern stamps — first-day covers and mint sets are widely sought. Pre-2022 Ukrainian stamps are underexplored by most Western collectors. Ukraine’s folk embroidery (vyshyvanka) and Easter egg (pysanka) stamp themes are popular with craft and cultural collectors.
