Postal Service Overview

Swiss Post (Die Schweizerische Post / La Poste Suisse / La Posta Svizzera) operates in all four Swiss national languages reflecting the country’s linguistic diversity. As a federal enterprise, Swiss Post provides universal postal service across the Swiss Confederation. Switzerland occupies a unique position in philately — it was among the very first countries to issue stamps (1843 cantonal issues predating federal stamps), and it hosts major international organisations including the United Nations and UPU that issue their own stamps in Geneva.

Notable Stamp Issues

The 1843 Geneva Double Geneva (Double Genève) and the 1843 Zurich 4 and 6 Rappen stamps are among the world’s first and rarest stamps — only a handful of examples exist. The 1845 Basel Dove stamp is another celebrated rarity. Federal Swiss stamps began in 1850 with the Ortspost and Rayon issues. Switzerland’s Pro Juventute semi-postal stamps (issued since 1913) and Pro Patria stamps are beloved collector series. Swiss engraved stamps are technically superb.

Collecting Tips

The Zumstein catalogue (published in Bern) is the definitive Swiss reference. UN Geneva stamps (issued since 1969) form a separate but related collecting area. Swiss cantonal stamps require specialist expertisation — forgeries and reprints exist. Switzerland’s semi-postal charity stamp series (Pro Juventute, Pro Patria) are popular annual sets. Liechtenstein uses Swiss francs and has postal connections to Swiss Post, making the two a natural dual collection.
