Postal Service Overview

PostNord Sverige is Sweden’s postal operator, formed in 2009 when Sweden Post (Posten AB) merged with Denmark’s Post Danmark. PostNord handles mail and logistics across Scandinavia. Sweden’s postal history is among Europe’s most distinguished, with well-documented stamp issues from 1855 to the present. The Facit catalogue, published in Sweden, is the standard reference for Scandinavian stamps and is used by collectors throughout the Nordic region.

Notable Stamp Issues

Sweden’s 1855 3 skilling banco misprint in yellow (instead of the correct green) is philately’s greatest known rarity — only one example exists, and it sold for over $2 million at auction in 1996. Sweden’s first stamps (1855) depicted the Swedish coat of arms. The Lion definitive series and Gustaf Adolf portraits are classic early Swedish issues. Sweden issued the world’s first stamp booklets in 1895, making it a pioneer in postal innovation. Modern Swedish stamps are noted for artistic photography and Scandinavian design.

Collecting Tips

The Facit Frimärken i Norden catalogue is essential. Swedish classic stamps from the 1855–1910 period are well-documented and relatively affordable compared to their rarity. The 1858 numeral cancellations are a specialist study area. Sweden’s early stamp booklets (1895 onwards) are highly collectible. Commemorative booklets and coil stamps of the modern era are popular.
