Postal Service Overview

Correos (Sociedad Estatal Correos y Telégrafos) is Spain’s national postal operator, a state-owned company headquartered in Madrid. Spain has one of Europe’s longest stamp-issuing histories, with its first stamps appearing in 1850. The Spanish postal service covers mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Spain also has historical philatelic connections through its former colonies in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

Notable Stamp Issues

Spain’s first issue appeared on 1 January 1850 — a 6 cuartos black depicting Queen Isabella II. The 1930 Goya series, reproducing Francisco de Goya’s paintings in beautifully engraved stamps, is one of Spain’s most admired philatelic achievements. The 1936–1939 Civil War produced stamps from both Republican and Nationalist zones, creating complex collecting opportunities. Franco-era definitives (1939–1975) form a long series. Modern Spanish stamps have featured world-class art reproductions and topical programmes.

Collecting Tips

The Edifil catalogue (published in Madrid) is the essential Spanish reference. Civil War stamps from Republican and Nationalist administrations require careful authentication — forgeries and propaganda labels are common. Spanish colonial stamps (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Philippines pre-1898) are a major related area. Early Isabella II issues exist in many varieties and shades. The Carlist War stamps (1874) are a specialist area.
