Postal Service Overview

The Ufficio Filatelico e Numismatico di San Marino manages the Most Serene Republic’s stamp programme. San Marino, the world’s oldest republic (founded 301 AD), has issued stamps since 1877. Despite being completely surrounded by Italy and closely integrated economically, San Marino maintains its own postal administration and issues stamps distinct from Italian issues. San Marino stamps are valid for postage within the republic and to international destinations, and are sold at a premium reflecting the country’s philatelic reputation.

Notable Stamp Issues

San Marino’s first stamps, issued 1 August 1877, depicted the Three Towers of Guaita — the republic’s iconic medieval fortresses that crown Monte Titano. These simple but charming first issues established San Marino’s philatelic identity. The 1929 definitive series is classically beautiful. San Marino has produced outstanding topical stamps on art (it has close cultural connections with Italian Renaissance and Baroque traditions), motorsport, and international themes. The country’s stamps are printed by leading security printers and are noted for technical quality.

Collecting Tips

San Marino’s annual stamp programme is relatively small, making complete collections feasible. The country is a member of the UPU and its stamps are listed in major catalogues including Michel and Scott. San Marino produces many joint issues with European postal administrations. Classic San Marino stamps from 1877–1940 are affordable and charming. The Three Towers of San Marino appear on many issues and are a popular architectural thematic. San Marino’s numismatic and philatelic office also produces coins for collectors.
