Postal Service Overview

Pochta Rossii (Почта России / Russian Post) is Russia’s state-owned national postal operator. Russia’s stamp-issuing history spans the Imperial Russian Empire (1857–1917), the revolutionary transitional period (1917–1922), the Soviet Union (1922–1991), and the Russian Federation (1991–present). The Soviet era in particular produced one of the world’s most prolific and politically significant stamp programmes — comprehensively documenting the USSR’s ideology, achievements, and aspirations through philatelic art.

Notable Stamp Issues

Russia’s first stamps, issued 1 January 1858, depicted the Imperial Eagle in three denominations. The classic Imperial Russian issues (1858–1917) are elegant and historically significant. The 1917 revolution produced overprinted and provisional stamps of great rarity. Soviet stamps from the 1920s onwards documented space achievements (Sputnik, Gagarin), socialist labour, military victories, and cultural heroes. The 1969 Moon landing series and Stalin-era propaganda stamps are particularly sought. Post-1991 Russian Federation stamps have featured Russian Orthodox churches, national parks, and historical events.

Collecting Tips

Three distinct catalogues are needed for comprehensive coverage: Russia classics require specialist knowledge of printing varieties. Soviet stamps are extensively catalogued in Michel and Scott. Post-1991 stamps are listed in standard catalogues. Zemstvo local stamps (1864–1917) — issued by local administrations — are a vast specialist area requiring dedicated catalogues. Soviet thematic stamps (space, aviation, sports) are the most popular collecting area internationally. Russian stamps are increasingly hard to obtain through normal philatelic channels due to sanctions.
