Postal Service Overview

PostNL is the Netherlands’ principal postal operator, separated from its telecoms counterpart TNT in 2011 and listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange. PostNL also operates in Belgium and other European markets. The Netherlands has a distinguished stamp-issuing tradition dating to 1852, with Dutch stamps consistently recognised for their high printing quality and thoughtful design. The NVPH (Nederlandse Vereniging van Postzegelhandelaren) catalogue is the standard reference.

Notable Stamp Issues

The Netherlands’ first stamp, issued 1 January 1852, depicted King William III and was engraved by Johann Wilhelm Kaiser. The classic numeral stamps of the 1870s–1890s are elegant philatelic objects. The Queen Wilhelmina stamps issued through WWI are a major collector area. The Netherlands produced striking Jugendstil-influenced designs in the early 20th century. Post-WWII Dutch stamps, including the famous Child Welfare semi-postal series begun in 1924, are beloved by collectors. Modern Dutch self-adhesive stamps are widely used.

The NVPH catalogue is essential for Dutch collectors. The Child Welfare (Kinderzegels) semi-postal stamps, issued annually since 1924, form a popular thematic collection. Dutch colonial stamps — Netherlands Indies, Suriname, Netherlands Antilles, and Curaçao — are significant related areas.
