Postal Service Overview

The Office des Émissions de Timbres-Poste de Monaco manages the Principality’s stamp issues. Monaco, the world’s second-smallest sovereign state, has issued stamps since 1885 and maintains one of Europe’s most prestigious philatelic programmes. Monégasque stamps are renowned for their exceptional printing quality — typically recess (engraved) printed by the French Imprimerie des Timbres-Poste — and their association with the glamorous Grimaldi dynasty. Monaco stamps are valid for postage within the principality and internationally.

Notable Stamp Issues

Monaco’s first stamps, issued 1 October 1885, depicted Prince Charles III in a classic engraved portrait. The 1920s Blanc definitives are elegant. The 1956 Royal Wedding stamps commemorating Prince Rainier III’s marriage to American actress Grace Kelly are among the most famous celebrity stamps ever produced and remain widely sought. Albert I oceanographic expedition stamps are historically important. Monaco produces annual stamp issues frequently related to the reigning Grimaldi family, Mediterranean marine life, and Monte Carlo’s luxury lifestyle.

Princess Grace (Grace Kelly) stamps attract celebrity and royalty thematic collectors worldwide. Monaco’s annual EUROPA issue and topical programme on oceanography, the Rallye Monte Carlo, and Mediterranean culture are popular. Monaco’s postal museum in Monte Carlo is worth visiting for stamp historians.
