Postal Service Overview

Poșta Moldovei (Moldova Post) is the Republic of Moldova’s national postal operator. Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union on 27 August 1991 and began issuing stamps later that year. Moldovan philatelic history is closely related to Romanian stamps — Moldova uses the Romanian language and shares many cultural connections with Romania. The breakaway region of Transnistria (Transdniestria) has issued its own unofficial stamps since 1992, creating a parallel and controversial collecting area.

Notable Stamp Issues

Moldova’s first stamps in 1991 depicted the Moldovan coat of arms featuring the aurochs (wild ox) head, eagle, and traditional symbols. Subsequent stamps have featured Moldova’s world-famous wine industry, traditional folk costumes, Orthodox monasteries (Orheiul Vechi, Căpriana), and Moldovan folk music. The Transnistrian issue — produced by the self-declared Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — is not recognised by most postal authorities but is collected as a cinderella or specialist item.
