Postal Service Overview

Post of Kosovo (Posta e Kosovës) is Kosovo’s national postal operator. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008 and is recognised by over 100 UN member states, though its recognition remains contested. Kosovo’s philatelic history began in 2000 under UNMIK (United Nations Mission in Kosovo), making it one of only a few territories administered by the UN to have issued stamps under UN auspices. Kosovo uses the Euro as its currency.

Notable Stamp Issues

Kosovo’s first stamps, issued in 2000 under UNMIK administration, depicted peace-themed imagery and were valid for postage within Kosovo. These UNMIK stamps are historically unique. Following independence in 2008, the Republic of Kosovo issued its first national stamps featuring the map of Kosovo, the new national flag, and the iconic Newborn monument in Pristina. Subsequent issues have featured Kosovo’s medieval monasteries (Visoki Dečani, Patriarchate of Peć), traditional costumes, and natural landscapes including the Rugova Gorge.

Collecting Tips

UNMIK-era Kosovo stamps (2000–2007) are historically significant and relatively uncommon in collector hands. Post-2008 republic stamps are the mainstream collecting area. Kosovo’s philatelic recognition status means it is listed in some but not all major stamp catalogues — Michel includes Kosovo. The country produces a modest annual programme. Kosovo’s stamps are an important item for collectors of new nations and UN administration stamps.
