Postal Service Overview

Magyar Posta Zrt. is Hungary’s state-owned national postal operator, headquartered in Budapest. Hungary’s stamp-issuing history reflects its complex political journey: as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (sharing stamps with Austria until 1867, then issuing its own from 1871), the post-WWI Hungarian Republic, Horthy-era Hungary, WWII and occupation, the Communist People’s Republic (1949–1989), and the modern republic since 1989. Hungary produces prolific and often colourful stamp issues.

Notable Stamp Issues

Hungary’s first independent stamps appeared in 1871 with numeral designs. The 1945–1946 inflation stamps are extraordinary historical artefacts: as the post-WWII pengő collapsed in the world’s worst recorded hyperinflation, stamps with face values up to 500 trillion pengő were issued — the highest denominations in stamp history. The Millenáris series (1000th anniversary of Hungarian settlement, 1896) produced Hungary’s first great commemorative set. Communist-era stamps (1949–1989) are prolific and feature sport, space, and political themes.

Collecting Tips

The Magyar katalógus is the standard Hungarian reference. Inflation-era stamps (1945–1946) are affordable and historically fascinating — the escalating denominations tell the story of economic collapse. Hungarian classics from the Austro-Hungarian period are collected alongside or separately from Austrian issues. Hungary has issued many colourful topical stamps on butterflies, birds, and art — popular with thematic collectors. Hungary’s 1930s semi-postal charity stamps are well-designed.
