Postal Service Overview

La Poste is France’s national postal service, operating as a public limited company since 2010. It handles mail delivery throughout metropolitan France and the French overseas territories and departments. La Poste has a distinguished philatelic programme managed through its dedicated stamp division, producing high-quality engraved stamps that are prized by collectors worldwide. France is notable for its tradition of recess (intaglio) printing, which produces stamps of exceptional tactile quality.

Notable Stamp Issues

France’s first stamp, issued 1 January 1849, depicted Cérès — the Roman goddess of agriculture — engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre. The 20c black is among the most coveted of all French classic stamps. The Marianne, a symbolic female figure representing the French Republic’s values of liberty, equality, and fraternity, has served as the face of French definitive stamps since 1944 and has been redesigned by different artists across the decades. France’s art stamp programme reproduces masterpieces from the Louvre and other national collections with outstanding printing fidelity.

Collecting Tips

The Yvert & Tellier catalogue (published in Tours) is indispensable for French collectors. France’s classic period (1849–1900) offers many grill and cancellation varieties. The engraved commemorative stamps of the 1930s–1970s are particularly admired for their artistry. French stamp booklets and coil stamps are specialist sub-areas. Collectors should note that Alsace-Lorraine (1870–1871) and French occupation zones also produced distinct stamps.
