Postal Service Overview

AzərPoçt (Azərpoçt MMC) is Azerbaijan’s national postal operator. Like Armenia and Georgia, Azerbaijan has two stamp-issuing periods: the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1919–1920) — the first parliamentary republic in the Muslim world — and the post-Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan (1992–present). Azerbaijan is a significant energy producer with Caspian Sea oil exports, and this industrial heritage alongside the country’s Caucasian cultural traditions appear on modern stamps.

Notable Stamp Issues

Azerbaijan’s 1919 first stamps, issued by the Democratic Republic, depicted the Baku oil fields and symbolic designs. These were overprinted on Russian stamps due to printing resource constraints. Post-Soviet Azerbaijani stamps from 1992 feature the Maiden Tower of Baku’s Old City, the Flame Towers, Caspian sturgeon and caviar, traditional Azerbaijani mugham music, and carpet weaving — all UNESCO-recognised cultural heritage. The Karabakh conflict has produced commemorative stamps reflecting the country’s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.

Collecting Tips

First Democratic Republic stamps (1919–1920) are rare and require expertisation. Post-1992 stamps are listed in Michel. Azerbaijani stamps on pomegranates (the national symbol), horses, and Caspian wildlife are popular with thematic collectors. The country’s EUROPA stamp participation began in 2004. Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic has occasionally been noted separately in philatelic literature. Azerbaijan’s ancient petroglyphs (Gobustan) feature on archaeological-themed stamps.
