Postal Service Overview

Åland Post (Post Åland) is the autonomous Province of Åland’s postal operator, separate from Finnish Posti since 1 March 1984. Åland — a demilitarised Swedish-speaking archipelago of some 6,700 islands and islets in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden — issues its own stamps as part of its autonomous status. Though geographically Finnish, Åland uses Swedish as its official language and maintains strong cultural ties to Sweden. Åland stamps are listed in both Finnish and Swedish philatelic catalogues and are popular with Scandinavian collectors.

Notable Stamp Issues

Åland’s first stamps in 1984 depicted the Åland arms and a map of the archipelago. Subsequent definitive and commemorative issues have featured the maritime heritage of the islands — sailing ships, lighthouses, wooden boats, and the Mariehamn harbour. Åland’s Viking heritage, manor houses, and medieval churches have appeared on commemoratives. The islands’ distinctive red granite landscape and Baltic flora feature on nature stamps. Åland participates in SEPAC joint issues with other small European postal administrations.

Collecting Tips

Åland stamps are listed in the Suomen Postimerkkiluettelo (Finnish catalogue) and AFA Norden. The annual programme is very small — fewer than 20 stamps per year — making complete collections from 1984 entirely achievable. Åland’s maritime and shipping heritage stamps are popular with naval and merchant marine thematic collectors. The deMilitarisation of Åland (established 1856 and confirmed 1921) features on some historical commemoratives. First-day covers with the Mariehamn postmark are popular.
