Postal Service Overview

Sri Lanka Post (ශ්‍රී ලංකා තැපැල් / இலங்கை தபால்) is Sri Lanka’s national postal operator. Sri Lanka’s philatelic history spans British colonial Ceylon (stamps from 1857) and independent Ceylon (1948–1972) and Sri Lanka (1972–present). Ceylon stamps are among the most popular in the British Commonwealth — the country’s lush tropical beauty, Buddhist heritage, and colonial tea industry are reflected in beautifully produced stamps. The country’s name change from Ceylon to Sri Lanka in 1972 marks a clear philatelic boundary.

Notable Stamp Issues

Ceylon’s first stamps in 1857 depicted Queen Victoria in the classic Crown Colony design — typical of British colonial practice. The 1861 and 1872 definitive series are classic Victorian colonial stamps. Ceylon’s 1935 Silver Jubilee and 1938 pictorial definitives featuring the Sigiriya Rock Fortress are admired. Independence stamps from 1948 established Ceylon’s post-colonial identity with the Lion Flag and Kandyan dance themes. Sri Lanka’s post-1972 stamps feature the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), blue whale (world’s largest animal), and Sri Lanka’s endemic biodiversity.

Collecting Tips

Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue covers both Ceylon and Sri Lanka stamps separately. Ceylon stamps are a classic British Commonwealth collecting area — well-documented with clear printing varieties. The Sigiriya Rock Fortress definitives are popular architectural stamps. Sri Lanka’s endemic bird stamps (including the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie) are popular with ornithological collectors. Blue whale stamps are among the world’s most popular marine mammal thematic stamps. Tea plantation and gem mining stamps are distinctive Sri Lankan subjects.
