Postal Service Overview

PHLPost (Philippine Postal Corporation) is the Philippines’ national postal operator. Philippine philatelic history is uniquely tri-colonial: Spanish colonial stamps (1854–1898), American administration stamps (1899–1946), and independent Republic of the Philippines stamps (1946–present) each form distinct collecting areas. The Philippines is the only Asian country that was a colony of both Spain and the United States, giving it a philatelic history that bridges European colonial, American administrative, and Asian independence traditions.

Notable Stamp Issues

The Philippines’ first stamps under Spanish rule in 1854 depicted Queen Isabella II — similar to Cuban and Puerto Rican colonial stamps from the same period. The 1898 Spanish-American War and subsequent US occupation produced overprinted stamps. American administration stamps (1899–1946) — US stamps overprinted “PHILIPPINE ISLANDS” then locally designed issues — are popular with US collectors. Japanese occupation stamps (1942–1945) are a WWII specialist area. The Commonwealth period (1935–1946) produced distinctive stamps. Independent Republic stamps feature José Rizal (national hero), Philippines Eagle, and cultural heritage.
