Postal Service Overview

Maldives Post is the Republic of Maldives’ postal operator. The Maldives, an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands in the Indian Ocean, began issuing stamps in 1906 under British protection and has maintained an active philatelic programme since independence in 1965. The Maldives’ extraordinary marine environment — among the world’s richest coral reef ecosystems — makes its stamps particularly popular with marine biology and underwater thematic collectors. The country is also facing an existential threat from climate change and rising sea levels, themes that appear on modern commemoratives.

Notable Stamp Issues

The Maldives’ first stamps in 1906 were British protectorate issues depicting the dhow and Maldivian pattern motifs. The 1950s and 1960s definitive series feature the Maldivian minaret and tropical scenery. Post-independence stamps from 1965 established a Maldivian national identity. The Maldives has produced outstanding marine stamps — reef fish (napoleon wrasse, parrotfish, lionfish), sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks, and coral formations appear on many beautifully designed stamps. Climate change stamps depicting coral bleaching are unique environmental documents.
