Postal Service Overview

Pos Malaysia Berhad is Malaysia’s national postal operator, a publicly listed company. Malaysian philately is among the world’s most complex: the Straits Settlements (Penang, Malacca, Singapore), the Federated Malay States (Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Pahang), and the Unfederated Malay States (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis) each issued separate stamps under British protection. Post-independence Malaysia (1963–present) continues the tradition of individual state issues alongside national stamps, creating an ongoing dual-layer stamp programme.

Notable Stamp Issues

The Federated Malay States stamps (1900–1935) are classic British Commonwealth issues featuring tigers, elephants, and jungle scenery. Individual state stamps — Perak’s tiger definitives, Selangor’s arms and sultan portraits, Johor’s distinctive designs — are widely collected. Sarawak’s Brooke Rajah stamps (1869–1946) are among the world’s most romantic colonial issues. North Borneo Company stamps (1883–1946) are classic charter company philately. Post-independence Malaysian national stamps feature orang-utans, Rafflesia flowers, and the Petronas Towers.
