Postal Service Overview

Kuwait Post (بريد الكويت) operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Kuwait began issuing stamps in 1923 under British protection — British stamps overprinted “KUWAIT” in English and Arabic — and issued its own national stamps following independence in June 1961. Kuwait’s philatelic programme documents one of the world’s most dramatic economic transformations: from a pearl-fishing and trading town to one of the world’s wealthiest nations per capita through oil production. The Iraqi invasion (1990–1991) and subsequent liberation produced historically significant stamps from multiple countries.

Notable Stamp Issues

Kuwait’s first stamps were British stamps overprinted “KUWAIT” — used from 1923 through the independence era. Kuwait’s own-design stamps began in 1959, featuring the Emir’s portrait and dhow scenes. Post-independence stamps from 1961 depicted Kuwait’s rapid modernisation. Oil industry stamps featuring the Kuwait Oil Company operations are unique Gulf industrial stamps. The 1991 liberation stamps — produced by the Kuwaiti government in exile — are historically charged documents of the Gulf War. Post-liberation stamps celebrating liberation and reconstruction are widely collected.
