Postal Service Overview

PT Pos Indonesia is Indonesia’s state-owned national postal operator. Indonesia’s philatelic history spans Dutch colonial Netherlands Indies stamps (1864–1948) and the Indonesian Republic stamps from 1945. Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago nation with over 17,000 islands and 270 million people, produces stamps reflecting its extraordinary cultural and natural diversity. The Dutch colonial period produced distinctive stamps that form a significant separate collecting area within the broader Netherlands Commonwealth philatelic world.

Notable Stamp Issues

Netherlands Indies stamps (1864–1948) are classic Dutch colonial material — the Queen Wilhelmina and Juliana portrait series form long runs across decades. Indonesia’s first stamps in 1945 (during the revolution against Dutch return) depicted President Sukarno — among history’s most politically charged stamp issues. The 1948–1949 revolution period produced regional issues from multiple Indonesian Republican territories. Modern Indonesian stamps feature the Borobudur temple (one of the world’s great Buddhist monuments), Komodo dragons, Birds of Paradise, and traditional batik patterns.

The Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies (1942–1945) produced overprinted and new stamps that are a WWII specialist area. Indonesia’s regional revolutionary stamps (1945–1949) are historically significant and require specialist knowledge. Modern Indonesian stamps on Komodo dragons, orangutans, and Bali culture are popular with thematic collectors. Borobudur and Prambanan temple stamps attract archaeology enthusiasts.
