Postal Service Overview

India Post (Department of Posts) is India’s national postal operator, one of the world’s largest postal networks with over 150,000 post offices. India has one of the world’s richest and most complex philatelic histories: the British East India Company issued stamps from 1852, British India continued from 1854, and princely states (Feudatory States) issued hundreds of distinct stamp series across dozens of independent kingdoms. Independent India has issued stamps since 1947 reflecting the nation’s extraordinary diversity of culture, religion, geography, and history.

Notable Stamp Issues

The 1852 Scinde Dawk — issued by the East India Company for the Scinde (Sindh) district — is India’s and Asia’s earliest stamp, now in Pakistan’s territory. British India’s first general issue in 1854 depicted Queen Victoria in four denominations — the Four Annas blue being one of Asia’s most attractive classic stamps. Indian Feudatory States stamps (Jaipur, Hyderabad, Travancore, Kashmir, Cochin, etc.) constitute one of philately’s greatest specialist areas. Post-independence India has produced outstanding stamps on Gandhi, Nehru, the Taj Mahal, wildlife, and cultural heritage.

Indian Feudatory States are one of philately’s great specialist fields — hundreds of states, each with distinct designs and printing varieties, require decades to fully explore. Used examples of early British India on cover are premium items. Modern Indian stamps on wildlife (tiger, elephant, rhinoceros) are popular thematic items. Gandhi stamps from India attract worldwide collector interest.
