Postal Service Overview

The Postal Services Department of Brunei Darussalam (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Pos) is Brunei’s postal operator, a government department. Brunei, a tiny but enormously oil-rich sultanate on the island of Borneo, began issuing stamps in 1906 under British protection. Brunei gained full independence in January 1984 under Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah — the world’s longest-reigning living monarch and one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. Bruneian stamps are popular British Commonwealth items, featuring the Sultan’s portrait, the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and Borneo’s extraordinary rainforest.

Notable Stamp Issues

Brunei’s first stamps in 1906 were British protectorate issues depicting the river scene at Brunei Town (now Bandar Seri Begawan). The 1924 and subsequent definitives featured the river view with boats — charming colonial designs. The 1949 definitive series featuring the Sultan’s portrait and the Royal Barge is a classic British colonial Commonwealth set. Post-independence stamps from 1984 feature Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in full regalia, the oil and gas industry (Shell production facilities), and the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque — one of the Pacific Basin’s most beautiful Islamic structures.

Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue covers Bruneian stamps. British protectorate period Brunei stamps (1906–1984) are standard Commonwealth collector items. The Royal Barge definitive series is among the most elegant of British Southeast Asian colonial stamps. Brunei’s oil industry stamps are unique — among the few stamps documenting the sultanate’s petroleum wealth. The proboscis monkey (found only in Borneo) and Borneo pygmy elephant appear on wildlife stamps. Brunei produces a modest annual programme with quality printing.
