Postal Service Overview

Bhutan Post (འབྲུག་དྲལ་འཕྲིན) is the Kingdom of Bhutan’s postal operator. Bhutan, the Buddhist Himalayan kingdom measuring itself by Gross National Happiness rather than GDP, has produced some of the world’s most innovative and unusual stamps since its first issues in 1962. Despite having a small population and limited postal infrastructure, Bhutan’s stamp programme has attracted global collector attention through imaginative formats including 3D lenticular stamps, steel-embossed gramophone records, silk-printed stamps, and scented stamps.

Notable Stamp Issues

Bhutan’s first stamps in 1962 depicted the Bhutanese landscape and coat of arms. The 1965 three-dimensional stamps (the world’s first 3D stamps using lenticular lens technology) immediately established Bhutan’s reputation for innovation. The 1973 steel-foil gramophone record stamps — playable records embossed on steel foil — are among philately’s most extraordinary objects, playing Bhutanese folk songs and national anthem. Self-adhesive silk stamps, scented stamps, and banana fibre paper stamps followed. Modern Bhutanese stamps feature dzongs (fortress-monasteries), the Takin (national animal), and Buddhist imagery.
