Postal Service Overview

Correo Paraguayo is Paraguay’s national postal operator. Paraguay’s philatelic history is inextricably linked to one of history’s most catastrophic wars: the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–1870), in which Paraguay fought against Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The war killed an estimated 60–70% of Paraguay’s population, including most adult males. Paraguay’s first stamps were issued in 1870, immediately after the war’s end — among the most historically poignant first issues in the Americas. The landlocked country has since maintained a continuous stamp programme.

Notable Stamp Issues

Paraguay’s first stamps in 1870 depicted a lion — the lion of the Paraguayan seal — in three denominations printed locally under difficult post-war conditions. These are among South America’s most historically charged stamps. The 1879 definitives followed with more refined designs. Paraguay’s post-war recovery is documented through its stamp programme. In the 20th century, Paraguay became known for issuing large quantities of thematic stamps on space exploration, famous paintings, and popular topical subjects — a revenue-generating practice common to several Latin American nations.

Paraguay’s 1879–1900 issues are classically beautiful South American material. The country’s extensive 1960s–1980s thematic stamp programme (space, art, sport) is colourful but was produced primarily for collector revenue rather than postal use. Classic used Paraguayan stamps on cover from the post-war recovery period are rare. The Chaco War (1932–1935) against Bolivia produced historically significant overprints.
