Postal Service Overview

Honducor (Empresa Nacional de Artes Gráficas) manages Honduras’s postal services. Honduras has issued stamps since 1866, making it one of Central America’s earlier stamp-issuing nations. Honduran philatelic history is modest in international collector attention but offers genuine collecting opportunities, particularly in classic 19th century material and airmail stamps. Honduras contains the ancient Mayan site of Copán — one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas — which appears on many commemorative stamps.

Notable Stamp Issues

Honduras’s 1866 first stamps depicted a standing figure of Liberty in an American Bank Note Company engraving — typical of the era’s Central American production. The 1878 and subsequent definitives introduced the distinctive Honduran coat of arms design. Honduras’s stamps were often overprinted with surcharges during periods of currency instability. The Mayan ruins of Copán — featuring the celebrated Hieroglyphic Stairway — have appeared on numerous Honduran commemoratives. Wildlife stamps feature the scarlet macaw (national bird) and Caribbean coastal species.
