Postal Service Overview

Haiti’s postal services have been operated under various institutional arrangements. Haiti’s philatelic significance derives from its extraordinary history: the world’s first Black republic (independence declared 1804 after a successful slave rebellion against French colonial rule), and the first Caribbean nation to gain independence. Haitian stamps reflect this unique heritage. The country’s ongoing political and economic challenges have disrupted consistent postal services, making classic Haitian stamps rarer than their Scott catalogue numbers suggest.

Notable Stamp Issues

Haiti’s first stamps in 1881 — nearly 80 years after political independence — depicted the Liberty Cap (Bonnet Phrygien) in colours reflecting the Haitian flag. Earlier Haitian postal history used stamps of neighbouring countries and private carriers. The 1904 centenary of independence stamps are historically significant. President Henri Christophe and the Citadelle Laferrière (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) have appeared on commemoratives. Haitian primitive art — Haiti’s vibrant naïve painting tradition — has featured on some beautiful stamps. The 2010 earthquake commemorative stamps are historically charged documents.
