Postal Service Overview

Guyana Post Office Corporation is the South American nation’s postal operator. Guyana — formerly British Guiana, the only English-speaking country in South America — has the most extraordinary philatelic pedigree of any nation: the unique British Guiana 1856 1¢ Magenta is the world’s most valuable stamp, the only known example of a provisionally printed stamp produced in Georgetown when the regular supply failed to arrive. Guyana gained independence from Britain in 1966 and has since produced stamps reflecting its Amazonian biodiversity.

Notable Stamp Issues

The British Guiana 1856 1¢ Magenta is a roughly octagonal stamp, locally printed on magenta paper, with a three-masted ship and the colony’s motto “Damus Petimusque Vicissim.” The unique example was discovered by a schoolboy in 1873 and has changed hands multiple times — most recently selling for $9.48 million at Sotheby’s in 2021. British Guiana’s other classic stamps (1850–1966) are significant Commonwealth issues. Guyanese independence stamps (1966–present) feature harpy eagles, Victoria amazonica water lilies, Kaieteur Falls, and the Guyanese interior landscape.

Kaieteur Falls (one of the world’s largest single-drop waterfalls) appears on nature stamps.
