Guatemala has issued stamps since 1871 and has a moderately developed philatelic tradition reflecting one of Central America’s most historically and culturally rich nations. The Maya civilisation — one of the ancient world’s most sophisticated — originated in Guatemala, and ancient Mayan sites including Tikal, Quiriguá, and Iximché appear frequently on Guatemalan stamps. The resplendent quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird, is among the most beautiful and frequently depicted birds in Central American philately.

Notable Stamp Issues

Guatemala’s 1871 first stamps depicted the national coat of arms — featuring the quetzal and the crossed rifles of Central American independence tradition. The 1878 definitives introduced more refined designs. Guatemala’s 1902 Quetzal definitives are a landmark series — featuring the beautiful bird in detailed engraved designs. The Mayan ruins of Tikal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) have appeared on numerous commemoratives. The 1968–1975 definitive series featuring Guatemalan handicrafts and traditional costumes is colourful and popular.
