Postal Service Overview

Instituto Postal Dominicano (INPOSDOM) is the Dominican Republic’s postal operator. The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of Hispaniola — the island it shares with Haiti — and has a complex history of Spanish colonial rule, Haitian occupation (1822–1844), and independence. Its first stamps appeared in 1865, and the country has maintained a continuous philatelic programme reflecting its Spanish colonial heritage, Caribbean culture, and the world’s favourite pastime in the Dominican Republic: baseball.

Notable Stamp Issues

The Dominican Republic’s 1865 first stamps depicted the national coat of arms. The subsequent 1879–1895 definitives are classic Caribbean stamps.
