Postal Service Overview

Belize Postal Service is the Central American nation’s postal operator. Belize — formerly British Honduras — has a distinguished philatelic history spanning British colonial administration and post-independence. British Honduras stamps (1866–1973) are a classic Commonwealth collecting area. Belize gained independence in September 1981 and has since produced stamps reflecting its remarkable natural heritage: the Belize Barrier Reef (the second largest in the world), ancient Maya cities including Caracol, Xunantunich, and Lamanai, and extraordinary biodiversity including jaguars, tapirs, and harpy eagles.

Notable Stamp Issues

British Honduras’s first stamps in 1866 were classic Victorian colonial issues depicting Queen Victoria. The subsequent British Honduras stamp series across Victoria, Edward VII, George V, and George VI reigns are classic Commonwealth collecting material. Belize’s independence stamps from 1981 established a new visual identity. Post-independence stamps have featured the jaguar (national animal), Belize Barrier Reef coral and tropical fish, Maya ruins, and the Garifuna culture (descendants of African and Arawak peoples). The 2021 centenary of the Royal Belize Police Force produced notable commemoratives.
