Postal Service Overview

Barbados Postal Service is the island nation’s postal operator. Barbados, the most easterly Caribbean island and formerly the most important British sugar colony, has one of the Caribbean’s longest and most distinguished stamp-issuing histories dating from 1852. Barbados was the last of the British Caribbean islands to be settled and the first to issue stamps, establishing a philatelic tradition that continues today. The island became a republic within the Commonwealth in November 2021, removing Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.

Notable Stamp Issues

Barbados’s first stamps in 1852 depicted Britannia — the classical female personification of Britain — in an engraved design that is among the most elegant of all British colonial stamp issues. The Britannia stamps ran in various colours and perforations through 1858. Subsequent Victorian-era issues continued the Britannia theme. The 1892 and subsequent Queen Victoria badge designs are classic British Caribbean stamps. Independence stamps from 1966 established Barbadian identity, featuring the flying fish (national symbol), the trident (now on the national flag), and sugarcane. The 2021 Republic stamps marking the transition from constitutional monarchy are historically significant.
