Postal Service Overview

The South African Post Office (SAPO) is South Africa’s state-owned national postal operator. South Africa has one of the world’s great philatelic histories: the Cape of Good Hope triangular stamps (1853) are among the most recognised and sought classic stamps globally, and the pre-Union stamps of the Cape Colony, Natal, the Orange Free State, and the South African Republic (Transvaal) each represent distinct and important collecting areas. The Union of South Africa (1910–1961) and Republic of South Africa (1961–present) stamps continue this rich tradition.

Notable Stamp Issues

The Cape of Good Hope’s 1853 triangular stamps — depicting the seated figure of Hope against a stormy seascape — are an iconic shape as well as beautiful designs. The triangular format was chosen specifically so that postal workers could distinguish the Cape stamps by feel in darkness. The 1d vermillion and 4d blue are the two classic denominations. The triangular 4d blue was reprinted in deep blue — creating one of philately’s famous misprint rarities, the 4d blue on white paper. The Orange Free State’s 1868 stamps and Transvaal’s classic issues are equally historic. Post-Union South African stamps include the distinctive bilingual English/Afrikaans pairs.

Stanley Gibbons Commonwealth catalogue covers all South African issues. Cape of Good Hope triangulars are expertised by the Philatelic Federation of Southern Africa. The 1d vermillion unused is rarer than the used. Natal, Orange Free State, and Transvaal are separate specialist areas. Anglo-Boer War period stamps (1899–1902) are historically fascinating. Union-era South Africa’s bilingual stamp pairs (printed alternately in English and Afrikaans) are a distinctive format. Apartheid-era boycott stamps and post-1994 “Rainbow Nation” issues document political transition.
