Sierra Leone Postal Services is the postal operator of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone’s philatelic history spans British colonial stamps (from 1859) and independent Sierra Leone (1961–present). Sierra Leone holds a unique place in philatelic innovation: in 1964–1965, it issued the world’s first self-adhesive stamps — country-shaped die-cut stamps depicting a map of Sierra Leone — a format that has since become universal in modern stamp production. These innovative stamps are a landmark in philatelic history, issued decades before self-adhesive stamps became standard.

Notable Stamp Issues

Sierra Leone’s first stamps in 1859 were Queen Victoria Crown Colony designs — classic early British West Africa material. The subsequent Victorian and Edwardian colonial issues are standard British Commonwealth stamps. Sierra Leone’s 1963 independence stamps established national identity.
