Postal Service Overview

NIPOST (Nigerian Postal Service) is Africa’s most populous nation’s postal operator. Nigeria’s philatelic history is complex: British colonial Nigeria comprised multiple administrations — Lagos (stamps from 1874), Niger Delta/Oil Rivers Protectorate (1892), Niger Coast Protectorate (1893), and Northern and Southern Nigeria — each issuing stamps before unification. The Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria (1914) produced unified colonial issues. Independent Nigeria (1960–present) has issued stamps reflecting the country’s extraordinary cultural diversity: over 250 ethnic groups, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and other rich cultural traditions.

Notable Stamp Issues

Lagos’s first stamps in 1874 — Queen Victoria Crown Colony designs — are classic British West Africa material. Niger Coast Protectorate stamps (1893) feature distinctive canoe and trader scenes. British Nigeria’s 1921 definitive series is classic interwar Commonwealth material. Independence stamps from 1960 depicted the Niger River, national symbols, and Nigerian culture. Nigeria’s stamps have featured the Benin Bronzes (ancient masterpieces now at the heart of repatriation debates), diverse wildlife, and post-independence development. The 1966 decimal currency conversion stamps are numismatic curiosities.

Collecting Tips

Collecting the complete range of pre-unification Nigerian colonial administrations (Lagos, Niger Coast, etc.) is a rewarding specialist project. British Nigeria stamps (1914–1960) are standard Commonwealth material. Post-independence Nigerian stamps are affordable and underexplored. The Benin Bronzes stamps raise ethical questions collectors may wish to consider. Nigerian Independence Day commemoratives are regularly issued and historically significant.
