Postal Service Overview

Société Nigérienne des Postes (NIGER POSTE) manages Niger’s postal services. Niger was a French West Africa territory, issuing stamps from 1921 before absorption into the French West Africa collective (1944–1958). Independence came in August 1960. Niger — one of the world’s largest countries by area — is largely covered by the Sahara Desert, with the fertile Niger River valley in the south and the Aïr Mountains in the centre (home to remarkable Tuareg culture and Saharan wildlife). The country consistently ranks among the world’s least developed nations.

Notable Stamp Issues

Niger’s colonial stamps (1921–1944) used French West Africa type designs. French West Africa stamps served Niger 1944–1958. Post-independence stamps from 1960 depicted President Hamani Diori and Nigerien landscape. Nigerien stamps have featured the Aïr and Ténéré Natural Reserves (UNESCO heritage — the world’s largest protected area), Tuareg silver jewellery and camel caravans, the West African giraffe (critically endangered subspecies with its last 800 animals in Niger), and the addax antelope (near extinction, last wild populations in Niger). The dinosaur fossil beds of the Sahara have appeared on exceptional palaeontology stamps.
