Postal Service Overview

Liberia Postal Services manages the Republic of Liberia’s postal operations. Liberia has one of Africa’s oldest and most historically unique philatelic traditions. Founded in 1847 by freed American slaves repatriated from the United States, Liberia was Africa’s first modern republic — and issued stamps in 1860, making it one of the continent’s earliest stamp issuers. Liberia’s stamps reflect its unique American-African heritage, with Monrovia (named after US President James Monroe) visible in colonial-influenced architecture and imagery on many stamps.

Notable Stamp Issues

Liberia’s 1860 first stamps depicted a triangular design — echoing the Cape of Good Hope’s famous triangulars — featuring an elephant and the Lone Star (Liberian flag symbol). These are among Africa’s most historically evocative first issues. The 1880s and 1890s definitives featuring the Liberian pepper bird and coastal scenes are attractive Victorian-era African stamps. Liberia’s stamps have featured the rubber industry (Firestone established vast rubber plantations), the iron mining industry, and Pan-African themes. Like many small nations, Liberia issued extensive thematic stamps for collector revenue from the 1950s–1980s.

Scott Africa covers Liberian stamps. Classic Liberian stamps (1860–1910) are rare and historically significant — in fine used condition on cover they are premium items. The triangular 1860 first issue is an African philatelic landmark. Liberian stamps from the collector revenue era (1950s–1980s) produced many thematic sets on space, wildlife, and international subjects — quality varies. Civil war (1989–2003) era postal history is documented but difficult to find. Modern Liberian stamps on the West African pygmy hippopotamus are wildlife thematic items.
