Postal Service Overview

Lesotho Postal Services is the Kingdom of Lesotho’s postal operator. Lesotho — entirely surrounded by South Africa — is the world’s southernmost landlocked country and the only country in the world lying entirely above 1,000 metres altitude. It was the British Protectorate of Basutoland (stamps from 1933) before independence in October 1966. Lesotho’s unique geography — a high mountain kingdom with the Orange River rising in its peaks — makes it distinctive in African philately. The Basotho hat (mokorotlo), traditional horseback culture, and Maluti Mountains dominate the country’s stamp imagery.

Notable Stamp Issues

Basutoland stamps (1933–1966) are classic British Southern Africa Commonwealth material across George V, Edward VIII, George VI, and Elizabeth II reigns. The 1954 definitive series featuring Basuto horsemen, Qiloane Peak, and mountain scenery is particularly attractive. Independence stamps from 1966 established Lesotho’s national identity with the Basotho hat, Orange River waterfalls, and King Moshoeshoe II portrait. Modern Lesotho stamps feature the mountain pony (Basotho ponies are a distinct breed), the bearded vulture (lammergeier) soaring over the Maluti Mountains, and traditional blanket culture.
