Postal Service Overview

Posta Kenya is Kenya’s national postal operator. Kenya’s philatelic history begins with British East Africa stamps (from 1890), followed by the East Africa and Uganda stamps (from 1903), and the Kenya and Uganda stamps (from 1922), and the Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika (KUT) joint issues (from 1935) — a remarkable multi-territorial stamp-issuing arrangement that continued through independence. Independent Kenya’s stamps from 1963 reflect the country’s position as East Africa’s most prominent nation and home to the Maasai Mara and Amboseli wildlife.

Notable Stamp Issues

British East Africa Company stamps (1890–1895) are classic chartered company philatelic items. The KUT joint issues (1935–1976) — used across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika/Tanzania — are popular British Commonwealth collector items, featuring the distinctive lion and dhow designs. Kenya’s independence stamps from 1963 established national identity. Kenyan wildlife stamps — lion, elephant, cheetah, rhinoceros, giraffe — are among Africa’s most popular thematic items. The Maasai people, Kilimanjaro (seen from Kenya), and the Great Rift Valley lakes appear on outstanding pictorial issues.
