Postal Service Overview

Ghana Post is Ghana’s national postal operator. Ghana’s philatelic history spans the Gold Coast colonial period (British stamps from 1875) and independent Ghana (1957–present). Ghana holds a special place in African history and philately: on 6 March 1957, it became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule — a landmark that triggered the wider African independence movement of the 1960s. Ghana’s independence stamps are therefore among the most historically significant stamps in African philatelic history.

Notable Stamp Issues

Gold Coast stamps (1875–1957) are classic British West Africa material — Queen Victoria through George VI issues featuring the distinctive Gold Coast cocoa and scenes. Ghana’s 1957 independence stamps depicted Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana’s first president and Pan-African visionary) — these are philatelic markers of the birth of modern independent Africa. The 1961 definitive series featuring Ghanaian culture — kente cloth, drumming, independence arch — established Ghana’s national philatelic identity. Modern Ghanaian stamps feature cocoa (Ghana is a world leader in cocoa production), gold mining, and West African culture.
