Postal Service Overview

The Ethiopian Postal Service (የኢትዮጵያ ፖስታ ድርጅት) is Ethiopia’s national postal operator. Ethiopia has one of Africa’s oldest philatelic traditions — the Empire issued its first stamps in 1894, making it one of only a handful of African countries issuing stamps before the 20th century. Ethiopia was never colonised (defeating Italian invasion at the Battle of Adwa in 1896), giving its stamps a continuous national character unlike most African nations’ colonial-to-independence philatelic histories. The Haile Selassie era (1930–1974) produced Ethiopia’s most internationally known stamps.

Notable Stamp Issues

Ethiopia’s first stamps in 1894 depicted Emperor Menelik II — the ruler who would soon defeat Italy at Adwa (1896). The 1900s Lion of Judah definitives are classically beautiful. The 1930 coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie stamps — depicting the newly crowned “Lion of Judah, Elect of God, King of Kings of Ethiopia” — are among Africa’s most famous classic stamps. Haile Selassie portrait stamps span over four decades. Post-revolution stamps (after the 1974 Derg coup) feature Ethiopian cultural heritage, the Lalibela rock-hewn churches, and the Simien Mountains.
