Postal Service Overview

Eritrea Post manages the State of Eritrea’s postal services. Eritrea’s philatelic history has two distinct phases: Italian colonial Eritrea (stamps from 1893–1943) — one of Italy’s first colonial acquisitions — and independent Eritrea (stamps from 1993). Between these periods, Eritrean territory used stamps from British administration (1941–1952) and Ethiopia (1952–1993, during the UN-mandated federation and subsequent annexation). Eritrea’s independence in 1993 followed a 30-year liberation war — one of Africa’s longest armed independence struggles.

Notable Stamp Issues

Italian colonial Eritrea stamps (1893–1943) are classic Italian colonial issues — the same designs used across Italian Somalia, Libya, and other colonial territories, with Eritrea overprints. British Administration stamps (1941–1952) used British Middle East Forces (MEF) stamps overprinted “ERITREA.” Ethiopia stamps used in Eritrea (1952–1993) are distinguishable by Asmara postmarks. Independent Eritrea’s first stamps in 1993 depicted the new national flag, the Red Sea coast, and traditional Eritrean dress — among Africa’s most recent first issues of a new independent nation.
