Postal Service Overview

La Société des Postes du Tchad manages Chad’s postal services. Chad was a French colony (part of French Equatorial Africa, which also covered Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, and Central African Republic) and issued stamps first as part of the French Equatorial Africa collective (1936–1958), with earlier Chad-specific stamps from 1922. Chad gained independence in August 1960. The country is Central Africa’s largest nation by area, landlocked and dominated by the Sahara Desert in the north and Lake Chad basin in the south. Chad’s postal infrastructure is severely underdeveloped.

Notable Stamp Issues

French Equatorial Africa stamps (1936–1958) served Chad alongside three other French territories. Chad-specific colonial stamps (1922–1936) used French colonial designs with local imagery. Post-independence stamps from 1960 depicted Lake Chad and Chadian traditional culture. Lake Chad wildlife stamps — featuring the hippopotamus, African fish eagle, and the lake’s unique ecosystem — are distinctive. Saharan Touareg camel caravan stamps reflect Chad’s connection to ancient trans-Saharan trade routes. Chad has issued many topical stamps for collector revenue, including space and wildlife themes with limited postal relevance.
