Postal Service Overview

Correios de Angola (ENCTA — Empresa Nacional de Correios e Telégrafos de Angola) is Angola’s national postal operator. Angola was Portugal’s largest and most important African colony, and its stamp programme spans over a century of Portuguese administration (stamps from 1870) and post-independence MPLA government issues from 1975. Angola’s independence was followed by a devastating civil war (1975–2002) — one of Africa’s longest and most destructive conflicts — during which postal services were severely disrupted. Post-war Angola has become one of Africa’s wealthiest nations through oil production.

Notable Stamp Issues

Angola’s first stamps in 1870 were the standard Portuguese colonial type. The Ceres definitive series (1914–1940) appears in Angolan printings as part of the Portuguese colonial programme. Angola had several overprinted provisional issues during currency changes. Post-independence stamps from 1975 depicted MPLA (People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola) symbols and liberation imagery. Civil war period stamps are historically charged. Modern Angolan stamps feature the giant sable antelope (Angola’s national animal and one of Africa’s most endangered antelopes), oil industry, and Angolan folk dance kuduro.
